My $1299 Ceramic Watch that I picked up Saturday fell off the bathroom counter today and landed on the tile. I was thinking, no big deal, right? I mean, it's only 3' down and the crystal is Sapphire glass, so it shouldn't have done anything. When I got to work today, one of my coworkers asked about my watch and I noticed a smudge on the bottom. Low and behold, it's not a smudge. It's a shattered part of the glass with a crack that runs up the corner of the display. I dropped my Series one watch from this height. I know I did, and it wasn't sapphire glass, so why would this one break?

To make matters worse, there are no Genius Bar appointments until next week. It's not usable and really you have to look to see it, but still. It's only 4 days old. If they use one of my replacements on it, I'm going to return it and buy it again as I'm still within the 14 days. I think they'll just swap it out, but we'll see.

Here it is in all it's glory. Bottom right, you can see the chip. Second picture you can see the crack.

You? Imagine my feelings. I didn't want my coworker seeing my rage. I just turned around and went outside before spewing forth some rather ungentlemanly comments.

Sad, but hardness should not be confused with strength. Diamond is much harder than steal, but it is also easier to shatter. A blow from the wrong angle (one that aligns badly with the crystal structure) can break what is otherwise a very tough material.

While not an absolute rule, there tends to be a trade off between hardness and strength. Because the usual problem is scratches, the hardness of saphire is a premium material for watch faces. Gorilla glass is tougher when it comes to impacts; which other than price is probably why it's on the Sports and Nike models.

So Poet, do you run a screen protector on yours?

No. I don't use a screen protector on any of my devices.

I have the original Sports model. There are a few micro scratches along the edges that you can see if you tilt the screen just right, but other than that it's held up well. Except maybe the microphone. I pretty much have to yell at it for Siri to activate. Eventually I'll have to see if a 'very' careful cleaning around the microphone will improve that.

I don't think you can return it for a full refund if it's been damaged, even though you're within the 14 day return window. BTW, an Apple store always reserves a few Genius Bar appointment spots for walk ins. If you're there right when the store opens, go straight to the person handling Genius Bar appointments and you should get in right away. I did when I visited an Apple store to get my iPhone camera replaced.

I had the same problem with my microphone. A very careful cleaning had it working like new again.

I got AppleCare ;) I'm not crazy. I just don't want to use one of my replacements, if I don't have to. You know?

I can't find how many times you can replace the watch under AppleCare. I know the phone could only be replaced like 2 or 3 times.

It's probably the same as Applecare+ on other devices; two incidents of accidental damage.

I just checked the Apple website to verify the return policy. The item being returned has to be undamaged. Unfortunately, it looks like you'll have to use one of your two accidental damage claims to get your Watch fixed.

So, gave my watch to the Apple Genius yesterday. Here's why I'm mad.

I get it. I cracked the screen on day 3. My fault and why i bought the AppleCare. It's $800 to fix it, without AppleCare, so $79 is cheaper, but here's where they are screwing up. They cannot swap out in store like the iPhone or iPad, and cannot fix it in store like the Macs, so they have to send it in for repair. This means I'm without my watch for 2 weeks. I bought the Ceramic version. Spent $1500 on everything, and I get to go watchless for 2+ weeks? I mean, that sucks. I should get something for $1500, right? Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like if you spend that much money, then they should give you a loaner or something?

Did you ask about the Express replacement service? Apple will send you the replacement and you return the broken unit to Apple in the same box. That way you'd not be without an Apple Watch for two weeks.

That's what I got. Genius didn't say anything about it. What he said was they have to ship it somewhere, get it fixed or replaced and ship it back.

Little late. Already gave it to the Apple Store "Genius". Guess I'm waiting.
